It's one very sad reality that many people feel this way. It's terrifying that legislation is being passed in some countries to create a system that promotes the denial of basic human dignity.

It is a sickening thought to know that there are actually people in this world that feel this way. This law that allows "rape within a marriage" not only strips the woman of her dignity but also just adds to the fact that they are viewed so far below the men. It is a really depressing thought.

This reminds me of what we talked about in Government this morning: that even though our government may seem corrupt, we have a much better government than many other countries. No matter what your political views, there's no denying that we really are blessed to have a government whose purpose is to look out for the common good of the people.

Wow it's appalling that anyone could place such little value on a person simply because of their gender. Being a woman should give you no fewer rights than a man.

I find the part about the children only legally belonging to their fathers and grandfathers disturbing because without women, children would not exist. The female must bore the baby and raise the child in her womb. She sacrifices her own body to give her husband a child, and now this law wants to deny her the right to have guardianship over her children? Crazy.

I strongly agree with Mary. There is no denying that our government has its issues, but the fact is there can be no perfect government that will satisfy everyone. Thankfully our government's goal is for everyone to be equal, unlike Afghanistan

This is degrading women in the 21st century. It also brings light into America that the rest of world does not respect or have equal rights for women. It is a cause that needs to fought for around the world. It is the 21st century after all!

In Pope Benedict XVI's latest encyclical, "Charity in Truth" (which we'll be talking about in class), he spends some time opening up the conversation about whether a more international system of governance may be in order. Issues like this really seem to point to that need. The world is a lot less "us" and "them" than it used to be, and there's a responsibility to positively effect the systems that create these types of laws, but currently it seems that there's no real way for "us" to do that. What do you guys think? Should there be an international government that actually has some sort of power to enforce its decisions? What limits should be placed on such an organization?

Today in class we read more of the encyclical and Pope Benedict XVI said that the church stays out of foreign affairs, and I think that if the Catholic Church became involved in this issue, particularly, hatred would be expressed towards Catholics from the Afghanistans. Despite its unfairness and cruel nature, this new law seems based somewhat on the Afghanistans' religious views, so if someone does get involved the men could become easily insulted.

Hopefully one day, humanity will understand that sex and race do not determine rights and worth.

That is a really disturbing reality to think that stuff like that goes on today. I am very grateful that I was born in America and that I have a voice that can be heard.
